<trans-abstract xml:lang="en"><p>This article examines potential directions for urban sociolinguistic research in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), with a primary focus on its capital. Yakut specialists have accomplished a great deal in this area; however, existing publications are largely situated within quantitative sociology and sociolinguistics, providing a general overview without revealing the underlying mechanisms of linguistic processes. The next logical step in the field should be qualitative research employing in-depth interviews and participant observation. This will enable the exploration of topics such as individual and group bilingualism, the linguistic landscape of urban space, sociolinguistic studies of diasporas, language contact, code-switching and code-mixing, language choice in bilingual situations, and the like. Each of these topics is discussed alongside an extensive bibliography that includes both classic theoretical works and recent publications by Yakut scholars. The article also briefly addresses methodological challenges in researching these themes: the relationship and limitations of quantitative and qualitative methods, ethical issues related to publishing collected materials, the problem of researcher influence on the data, the need to work with authentic recordings of spoken language, the distinction between scientific and normative approaches to the phenomena under study, issues of data anonymization, adherence to ethical standards when working with informants, as well as the difficulties of recording and interpreting spontaneous spoken language in an urban bilingual environment, including the “observer’s paradox”, ethical constraints in fieldwork, the need for data verification, and the development of a representative.</p></trans-abstract><kwd-group xml:lang="ru"><kwd>социолингвистика города</kwd><kwd>Республика Саха (Якутия)</kwd><kwd>двуязычие</kwd><kwd>языковой ландшафт</kwd><kwd>диаспоры</kwd><kwd>языковые контакты</kwd><kwd>переключение кодов</kwd><kwd>выбор языка</kwd><kwd>качественные методы</kwd><kwd>методология полевых исследований</kwd></kwd-group><kwd-group xml:lang="en"><kwd>urban sociolinguistics</kwd><kwd>Republic of Sakha (Yakutia)</kwd><kwd>bilingualism</kwd><kwd>linguistic landscape</kwd><kwd>diasporas</kwd><kwd>language contact</kwd><kwd>code-switching</kwd><kwd>language choice</kwd><kwd>qualitative methods</kwd><kwd>fieldwork methodology</kwd></kwd-group><funding-group><funding-statement xml:lang="ru">Работа выполнена при финансовой поддержке РНФ в рамках реализации проекта «Языки и культуры народов Севера и Арктики РФ: комплексные социогуманитарные исследования (на основе анализа больших данных)» №25-78-30006 от 22.05.2025 г.</funding-statement><funding-statement xml:lang="en">Research was conducted with the financial support of the Russian Science Foundation “Languages and Cultures of the Peoples of the North and the Arctic of the Russian Federation: Comprehensive socio-humanitarian research (on the basis of big data)” No 25-78-30006 (22.05.2025)</funding-statement></funding-group></article-meta></front><back><ref-list><title>References</title><ref id="cit1"><label>1</label><citation-alternatives><mixed-citation xml:lang="ru">Волошинов В.Н.
